Energy required to heat, power and operate commercial buildings accounts for nearly a quarter of the built environment’s carbon footprint in the UK.

Many innovative solutions exist to maximise the energy and carbon savings of commercial assets, but a variety of factors limit their uptake. UKGBC, Breakthrough Energy and FORE Partnership are collaborating to address these urgent challenges and to accelerate the adoption of sustainable solutions for commercial retrofit.

At the centre of this work has been the creation of the Commercial Retrofit Innovation Map, which is a live, structured tool organising the retrofit innovation landscape into a clear taxonomy. It enables project teams to identify and compare interventions across building systems, supporting them in making better informed decisions.

As part of the initiative, the map was applied to a live project: the refurbishment of the iconic Grade II* listed No.1 Poultry building in London. This report details the practical way the map was applied to the building, outlining a repeatable, step-by-step approach to the innovation review and selection process.

Innovation in Commercial Retrofit

Commercial Retrofit Innovation Map

As the first part of the initiative, the Innovation Map showcases the breadth and depth of the positive, impactful work underway to make our built environment more sustainable. With innovation efforts often fragmented and knowledge siloed across the sector, the map brings these solutions together for the first time, and structures them into domains, systems, clusters and nodes so project teams can navigate logically

Thank you to Breakthrough Energy and FORE Partnership for their generous support
