What is the purpose of the Regenerative Places Framework?

What if every time we built or retrofitted our homes, the world around us got better? The Regenerative Places Framework is intended to enable regenerative approaches from within the current system. It sets out what a future regenerative system could look like, and provides examples, actions, and pathways from within the current system that can support this shift.

The framework will:

  • Reconsider how we understand and approach value, to focus on social and ecological benefits alongside economic benefits and promoting a shift from short-term viability to long-term system health.
  • Establish the importance of early and lasting community participation, through co-design, supporting stewardship, and acknowledging local people as experts in their place.
  • Promote a Living Systems approach, recognising that understanding a place also means understanding its systems, including local water, energy, biodiversity, skills and material systems, and how to have a positive impact.

Consultation (from 1st June 2026 until 19th June 2026)

We are seeking your feedback to ensure the Framework is best placed to support industry in embedding regenerative approaches at the organisation and project level. We invite challenge, reflection, and contribution from across the sector. The purpose of this consultation draft is to test and strengthen the ideas presented, explore different interpretations of regenerative housing, gather examples of emerging practice, identify gaps, opportunities and areas for further dialogue, build a shared understanding of how housing can contribute to thriving places.

The Regenerative Places Framework has been developed through the in-person convening of a Task Group made up of UKGBC members from across the built environment. Alongside this, we ran four in-person collaboration cafes, in Bristol, London, Manchester, and Edinburgh, to gather local perspectives on regenerative approaches. The Framework has been further complemented by desktop research and engagement with community groups.

This is an opportunity for all built environment stakeholders to provide feedback, as well as other local and regional organisations relevant to place-based approaches, including skills, energy, local government, health and community groups. We encourage anyone with an interest in regenerative design in the built environment to respond, from experienced professionals to those with a general interest.

Please download the consultation document below, which provides the full set of information that is needed to submit your feedback via this online form.

We will also be running 3 drop-in sessions if you would like to provide feedback in conversation. These will take place:

  • Thursday 4th June 2pm-3pm
  • Tuesday 9th June 2pm-3pm
  • Wednesday 17th June 12pm-1pm

If you would like to attend, please email tosca.herson@ukgbc.org to arrange.

Feedback received will inform the development of the Regenerative Places Framework. A consultation response document will be produced and shared publicly alongside the final Framework.
