UKGBC led a dedicated Retail Task Group on behalf of WorldGBC from April 2015 to February 2016, which fed into the global campaign ‘Better Places for People’. This global campaign builds on the foundation provided by the Health, Wellbeing and Productivity in Offices report and ensures that these principles can be taken forward in other building types.

Retailers, as well as those who invest in, develop and manage retail property, are increasingly keen to understand the relationship between sustainable store design, the health and wellbeing of staff and customers, and footfall and sales.

The Retail Task Group sought to:

  • adapt existing ways of measuring health and wellbeing set out in last year’s report specifically for the retail sector;
  • help strengthen the business case for sustainable stores; and
  • pilot the metrics in real stores – gathering real data and developing best practice case studies.

The report was broadened to include an international scope, in order to ensure the outputs were relevant for the retail sector globally.

From April 2015, the Task Group worked on adapting the Offices framework for retail environments as well as producing guidance notes and case studies.
