UKGBC’s upcoming Embodied Ecological Impacts of the Built Environment Project

The UK Green Building Council (UKGBC) has opened applications for both Project Partners and Task Group for its latest project on Embodied Ecological Impacts for the Built Environment.

As an industry, protecting nature and biodiversity is crucial if we’re to keep our sustainability targets on track. However, considering our impact on wildlife should go beyond just the site of development. Many of the building materials we use are extracted from the earth or from our natural environment. As we continue to strive for buildings that have a better ecological footprint, these further afield impacts must also be considered.  

The UK Green Building Council (UKGBC) has opened applications for both Project Partners and Task Group for its latest project on Embodied Ecological Impacts for the Built Environment. As part of the Resilience and Nature programme, this project will explore the different ways the built environment impacts nature and ecosystems, expanding the focus from carbon towards a holistic view. 

There is the opportunity to be involved in this project by being Project Partners or applying to be part of the Task Group. The project aims to explore the other ecological impacts that the built environment creates which can help influence design decisions within projects. This will be achieved by: 

  • Raising awareness of nature-related impacts of the built environment and equip businesses with the knowledge to enable better decision-making toward nature positivity 
  • Identifying a set of ’embodied impact’ categories that are most critical and deserve increased attention and research 
  • Expanding the conversation from carbon to other nature-related impacts, leading to a more holistic assessment of sustainability in the industry 

Applications for both the Task Group and Project Partners are being sought from within the UKGBC membership. We are looking for organisations and individuals who have experience and understanding of the ecological impacts of supply chains, resources efficiency, and holistic life cycle assessments that go beyond carbon.  

Applications for the Project Partners and Task Group Applications are open until 22nd November with a review process before the final Project Partners and Task Group members are announced. ‘
