• The Government has announced a new Great British Insulation scheme to help upgrade more than 300,000 inefficient homes, promising to mobilise £1bn of funding to reduce energy bills.
  • The scheme will provide grants to properties in lower council tax bands that also face relatively poor levels of energy efficiency, enabling a range of energy efficiency improvements such as roof, loft or cavity wall insulation.
  • A new online checker tool will allow interested households to check whether they are eligible.

Simon McWhirter UKGBC Deputy Chief Executive said:

Accelerating the insulation of our homes couldn’t be more important in tackling the energy bill crisis and climate emergency. If we are to end our dependence on gas, we need to slash energy demand and stop burning it to heat our homes.

“The launch is a welcome boost to the overdue task of retrofitting every home in the country and will make a meaningful difference to the households that are eligible for financial support.

We do also need to see a wider national strategy to reach beyond hundreds of thousands of homes to millions. We need much larger scale and sustained government investment, and supportive policies such as a modern energy-saving stamp duty to incentivise every house-buyer to upgrade their new home.”
