Problem addressed

The built environment is directly responsible for 25% of UK emissions, lifting to 42% if you include surface transport. For this industry to become more sustainable, it needs to leverage technology to manage the inherent complexities of sustainable improvements on the built environment and fast-track the required change.

Solution overview

Varig Technologies AS delivers one complete system to measure, improve and report on sustainability for commercial real estate.

Measure

Leveraging both proprietary and open-sourced technologies, the VARIG-system collects, compiles, and presents environmental performance data on both embodied (such as materials) and operational (such as energy, waste, and water) emissions, to give owners, managers, and tenants a complete performance overview of their portfolios, assets and sections.

Improve

As performance data is autonomously and continually updated in the system, VARIG’s features facilitate improvements in which the users can monitor the actual effects of the actions implemented and guide attention and efforts towards the most impactful areas.

Report

Keeping track of the performances on relevant KPIs, the VARIG-system offers both automated custom reports and framework integrations. This way users can generate boardroom-ready sustainability reports through just a few clicks, whilst advanced users get the additional benefit of VARIG’s integration to international reporting frameworks such as GRESB.

Sustainability in every building

VARIG is an enabler to a more sustainable real estate industry. VARIG drives positive change by facilitating the access and comprehension of sustainability data and significantly reducing the resources needed to work systematically and efficiently with sustainability.

VARIG functions as a stand-alone product, serving most needs to “get going” with sustainability work in commercial real estate, but also offers sophisticated features for more mature users.

Moreover, for clients seeking additional granularity in the datasets, VARIG can also leverage datasets of a range of affiliated “depth-providers” in the overlying strategic management system of VARIG.

he cost of the implementing the VARIG-system consists of a one-time fee for onboarding and an annual licence-fee.

The one-time fee is based on the number of buildings, ranging from approximately £2000 to £5000 per building.

The licence fee is based on the scope and complexities of the delivery, especially considering information on the number of buildings, sections (tenants), applications, locations, and square meters. Typically, a UK-client would pay approximately £200 annually per section connected to the system.

Furthermore, VARIG offers optional features, such as Tenant Engagement (content carousels for buildings’ common area screens) and GRESB-integration, which are priced per building per year.

Case study

As disclosed in this article, also editorially published by Norwegian tier 1 industry media Estate in December 2022, VARIG-client Karlander Eiendom secured a higher property valuation by documenting intents and effects of sustainability actions in the VARIG-system, resulting in several financial benefits.
