Technology to adapt room temperature based on occupancy levels

Problem Addressed
According to a study conducted by Oxford University, up to 40% of heating energy is wasted in empty rooms. Without room-by-room control, buildings are inefficient, and workspaces can be uncomfortable.
Case Study
EcoSync partnered with the University of Essex to install 136 of their devices over 4 buildings. Due to the prevalence of hybrid working and changing occupancy patterns, the university found they were often wasting energy by heating empty rooms. EcoSync devices were installed and connected via a single ethernet gateway to record 32 instances of data every 5 minutes, including air temperature, the radiator valve position, and the hot water flow temperature. This data provided an accurate view of how much energy each room in a building was using in real time to establish occupancy patterns. EcoSync’s machine learning models can then predict how much energy is need to heat any given room. The in-room QR codes help to encourage sustainable behaviours with users by showing them how their actions can lower energy use. From February to May 2023, EcoSync saved the University of Essex more than 25,000 KWh of energy, resulting in a 44.4% savings. The university has now committed to installing an additional 1500 devices in their Main Campus by December 2024.
