Despite heating being responsible for around two-thirds of a non-domestic building’s operational carbon footprint, less than 1% of buildings have smart heating controls. With traditional whole-building on/off operating regimes and an increase in hybrid working patterns, the waste problem is getting worse. Room-level smart technology has gained traction in the radiator heating systems of domestic buildings, but these have faced scalability challenges in the commercial world.

Overview of start-up

EcoSync is a scale-up PropTech business founded by Oxford University Engineers offering dynamic, room-by-room energy management solutions for commercial buildings, with a mission to reduce energy waste by stopping the heating of empty rooms. With Ecosync, Energy Managers have a new high-impact, low cost, non-disruptive tool in their toolkit to reduce carbon and costs and obtain insightful decision-making data within a world of complex, expensive, long-term decarbonisation projects. EcoSync battery-free and maintenance-free Smart Thermostatic Radiator Valves (TRVs) allow building owners and managers to remotely control heating in rooms according to occupancy and need. EcoSync’s data-driven technology intelligently adapts temperature according to occupancy and need, achieving energy savings of 25-50% for all of their clients.

Ecosync’s software is battery-free and maintenance-free, patented, and through its unique design it collects data every 5 minutes, which has collected over 2.5 billion datapoints to date.

How the start-up has been designed to scale-up quickly

Battery related products require regular maintenance and are not commercially scalable. This is because batteries need changing every 6 months, they do not expire at the same time, and are therefore a time and logistical nightmare for maintenance and facilities managers. When considering a 1000+ student accommodation for example, this is an impossible task. Each EcoSync TRV can be installed and running within 60 seconds and is battery free and maintenance free.
