About this event
We now have a Labour government. But what does a landslide Labour victory, so many Liberal Democrats and four Green Party seats mean for climate focussed policies? Will the Reform gains influence policy makers? Who are the key ministers and political influencers for our industry? With big changes promised on our central issues from planning reform and new developments to home retrofit – how do we best make our voice heard so change is good change? And how do we get other issues like tackling embodied carbon and upgrading commercial buildings onto the agenda?
We have worked closely with our renowned speaker Georgia Elliott-Smith to adapt this event to the snap General Election and make it even more topical and useful for our Leaders Network. Georgia founded Fighting Dirty with the environmental journalist and author George Monbiot to legally challenge loopholes in UK regulation which allow harmful pollution into our natural environment. She will be in the High Court on 9 July, just one week prior to our event, holding the government to account for their decision to axe testing for microplastics and forever chemicals in sewage sludge before it is spread on agricultural land and, potentially, into our food stream.
Georgia will, as planned, share her ‘disruptive sustainability’ journey and give us an insight into systems change from a legal perspective. But additionally, we will explore how we collectively campaign and champion for radical change. Some in the room will be active at Westminster, others may lean on UKGBC to voice the needs of the industry, but together we will discuss our needs, hopes and expectations over this next political term and test our appetite for bold leadership.
With a summer date, we have also opted for a central venue with some lovely outdoor space. Fingers crossed for good weather so we can connect in person, with drinks and canapes on a sunny rooftop garden. There will be plenty of time for networking, where we expect the new government might be a big talking point.
