Off the back of the IPCC’s damning Sixth Assessment Report, it has only become more urgent that our industry rallies to address the critical climate and nature issues facing our sector. As the second largest source of carbon emissions, directly responsible for around a quarter of UK’s carbon emissions, the built environment industry has a central role to play in putting the UK on track to deliver our climate targets. An important part of industry’s role in delivering radically sustainable outcomes will include upskilling the existing workforce and putting collaboration and innovation at the heart of its operations.

Designed to inspire the next generation of leaders, the Future Leaders programme is for forward-thinking professionals with 5-10 years’ experience who are keen to confront critical sustainability issues facing the built environment industry. Through a focus on both personal leadership and radical sustainability transformation, delegates will build the skills and mindsets required to support their organisation to innovate and make change happen.

To mark the tenth year, we will be running this edition across both Birmingham and London, including our signature nature-based offsite and will focus on taking ideas from the last 10 years of the programme and developing them into actionable business plans. Participants will gain skills in insight gathering, prototyping and experimentation as well as business model design.

Following graduation from the programme, the 2023 Summer cohort will join over 300 individuals and continue to collaborate through involvement in the UKGBC Leadership Alumni group, which brings opportunities for further widening of networks and professional development and access to a growing number of thought-leaders right across the built environment value chain.

We are thrilled to be running a summer edition of our Future Leaders programme. After ten years and over 170 of the built environment’s best and brightest partaking in the programme, there is a wealth of innovative and radical sustainability concepts for the incoming cohort to draw from and transform from ideas into action.

There is no more time to waste. Our industry must step up to co create, fund and implement the solutions needed to avert climate and nature breakdown. We see the Future Leaders programme as an accelerator for this progress and look forward to welcoming the next cohort of passionate built environment professionals to the course.
