2050 Materials
Problem Addressed
2050 Materials aims to democratise sustainability assessments in the construction sector by offering the simplification, structuring and centralisation of sustainability data on building products to a wider audience. More specifically, it aims to tackle the following three key pain points associated with current processes of product search, comparison, and selection in the construction industry:
- Increased complexity of Carbon and Life-Cycle Assessments (LCA) data.
- Customer and regional fragmentation in terms of product requirements.
- Lack of infrastructure/support for efficient research and benchmarking on building products, tailored to the needs and competencies of the typical stakeholder (e.g. architects, contractors and other specifiers).
Overview Of Start-up
2050 Materials centralises all sustainability information into a single platform, enabling designers to save time and money at any project stage. It tackles the lack of structured and easy-to-consume data around the sustainability performance of building products, while providing the largest database of sustainable building products with digitised environmental and health data. 2050 Materials aims to democratise sustainable design by offering design optimisation tools and simplified metrics on all building products, in a format that everyone can understand and use during their design and specification processes.
What Makes The Start-up Innovative
For 2050 Materials, the innovation lies in the utilisation of technology for the creation of a centralised database containing structured sustainability product information from multiple sources. This is achieved using semi-automated mechanisms that leverage tested NLP (Natural Language Processing) and OCR (Optical Character Recognition) algorithms to digitise analogue data from various sources (e.g., PDFs and manufacturer product catalogues). The product library is accompanied by search, analysis, visualisation, design optimisation and carbon assessment tools. Through this, it enhances the tasks of architects, contractors and other specifiers in their research for products while enabling them to quickly understand the impact of their decisions.
How The Start-up Has Been Designed To Scale Up Quickly
2050 Materials, being a cloud-based solution, is a highly scalable product as it can serve exponentially more clients without having to sustain an analogous increase in operating expenses. 2050 Materials can work efficiently with every new user as they are key stakeholders in enriching the existing product database with new information every time. To support scalability, 2050 Materials has established (i) a great team of leading individuals in almost every senior operational position, (ii) a set of measurement tools with business intelligence capabilities to ensure operational efficiency, (iii) a strong marketing and business development plan that will build a brand name, enhance awareness and increase leads for their clients, and (iv) a no-manufacturer-reliance approach to populate the product library via strategic partnerships and APIs. In addition, 2050 Materials does not restrict access to specifiers and construction professionals to ensure a rapid, on-going uptake of users that are directly enabled to understand complex data and make informed sustainability considerations in their decision making processes.
