Taking place in March, Futurebuild convenes over 15,000 attendees from across the breadth of the built environment value chain for an energising three days filled with cutting edge insights and discussions on leading sustainability topics. UKGBC is partnering with Futurebuild 2024, with sponsorship from Mitsubishi Electric UK.

Futurebuild and UKGBC’s mission are closely aligned. Just like UKGBC, for 16+ years Futurebuild has driven the sustainability agenda by showcasing innovation, enabling collaboration and championing sustainability.

UKGBC’s presence at Futurebuild is wide reaching, with workshops, report launches, panel discussion on diverse sustainability topics. See below for our full activity calendar.

11.00-12.00 Material Workshop delivered by Chetwoods Architects (UKGBC Stand)

We dive into all things sustainability when it comes to materials, including embodied carbon, supporting health and wellbeing, and the circular economy. We display a number of exciting material samples for an interactive session where attendees can challenge themselves to pick out the more sustainable material options and identify the red herrings

12.00-12.45 Call for action – the Mission Zero Coalition – an update (Main Stage)

How are we doing in reaching the UK’s 2050 Net Zero goal? What else do we need to do to get there faster? What role do emerging standards and might systems change play?

Simon McWhirter and Chris Skidmore.

14.00-15.00 Material Workshop delivered by Chetwoods Architects (UKGBC Stand)

15.15-16.00 Panel discussion – Are we climate ready? (Main Stage)

How resilient is our built environment to climate impacts, and what are the steps we need to take to build climate readiness? Hear about the progress of UKGBC’s Climate Resilience Roadmap project and how it can help your organisation.

16.15-17.00 Systemic barriers to tackling climate change (Main Stage)

Dealing with climate change is proving an intractable challenge. Is this a failure of public leadership as well as systemic challenges? What can unlock the barriers for change at the pace required? Who needs to make the changes? Where are the glimmers of hope?

Smith Mordak, Chief Executive, UK Green Building Council, UKGBC in conversation with their guests:

17.00-18.00 Launch of UKGBC’s Embodied Carbon Scope 3 Guidance (Main Stage)

Scope 3 makes up the largest part of any organisation’s emissions with the embodied carbon of buildings being an important part of those emissions. This session launches UKGBC’s new guidance detailing how organisations within the built environment can use embodied carbon assessments to inform their Scope 3 emissions. The guidance also explores how design teams and professional services should report the embodied carbon emissions of their designs.

10.30-11.15 Circular Economy – The role of material passports to deliver circularity in the built environment. (Buildings Stage)

Material passports are increasingly seen as a tool to solve many challenges around the circular economy in the construction sector, with many industry initiatives underway. This panel discussion will examine the potential of material passports, where challenges remain and what’s missing to them a success.

13.15-14.00 From Global Impacts to Local Solutions – Examining the Intersection of the Built Environment and Nature (Sustainable Infrastructure Stage)

The role of nature is still misunderstood in our industry. Our economy, built environment and every aspect of life is embedded in nature ultimately depending on it. Yet, in times of runaway biodiversity loss we continue to push our Earth’s system to the edge and beyond and fail to radically change course. What needs to change?
