We are seeking a passionate, knowledgeable and experienced Head of Energy and Carbon, with the purpose of leading technical research and expertise relating to the decarbonisation of and sustainable use of energy and resources by our built environment. This includes actions to be taken at national scale, as well as activities that can be done by stakeholders across the built environment industry. These actions should support an equitable transition towards a safe, healthy, and sustainable built environment for nature and all people through ensuring that the built environment is not perpetuating harmful gradual or sudden environmental change, but is actively mitigating the climate and nature crises through using and releasing resources at rates that are sustainable by natural and technical systems.

This role is ideal for a mid – to – senior career professional looking for growth into a Leadership role, and is keen to play a pivotal role in an increasingly vital and influential organisation. The industry-facing position offers the opportunity to bring subject-matter expertise and thought leadership to the co-creation of guidance, recommendations, and activities; across industry and political  (and wider) stakeholder groups, through carrying out collaborative research with members, partners, and stakeholders.

The role will sit within the new Technical and Policy Expertise team, reporting to the Director of the department, as well as having influence as part of the internal Leadership Team; collaborating across the organisation to implement and deliver the strategic aims of UKGBC.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and lead workstreams that enable greater action on climate change mitigation (c.70% of the role)
    • Lead the vision and strategy for how UKGBC can best enable its business members to design, construct, and operate buildings, infrastructure, and urbanplaces that are environmentally sustainable based on the latest science and research. This will involve working with colleagues, and consulting with members, industry organisations, and other stakeholders.
    • Lead the design and execution of projects relating to climate change mitigation and sustainable energy in line with the strategy. This includes creating additional tools, support, and guidance that businesses need to make further progress towards improving the sustainability of buildings and infrastructure.
    • Scope, deliver, maintain, and embed agreed sector roadmaps relating to climate change mitigation and sustainable energy use – with a view to setting science-driven industry-wide targets to be achieved in the short, medium and longer term.
  • Leadership responsibilities (c. 15%)
    • Take part in regular meetings of the Leadership Team whose purpose is to create plans and tactics to deliver against the strategic priorities of the organisation and contribute constructively to wider team forums
    • Maximise integrated ways of working to build an inclusive and high-performing, efficient culture
    • Day to day line management, motivation and empowerment of direct reports, their direct reports plus consultants / secondments where necessary
  • Partnerships & profile (c. 10%)
    • Build and maintain relationships with strategically important industry organisations (e.g. other green NGOs, industry bodies, think tanks) and potential funding organisations.
    • Represent UKGBC as a spokesperson at conferences and events to raise our profile amongst target audiences, and to promote our key messages to media and other outlets.
  • Member engagement (c.5%)
    • Engage with members and other stakeholders face to face, and via teams/zoom, phone and email regarding their overall engagement with UKGBC and to inform them of specific activities they could benefit from

This role can either be considered as a full time position (37.5 hrs per per week) or a part time position.

We reserve the right to close the vacancy early should we receive a suitable amount of candidates, so early application is encouraged.
