Problem Addressed

Construction waste.

Overview Of Start-up

Akustak®, by Mute Group®, is a British made, acoustic modular wall system; granted a UK patent in 2020. Specified on numerous high-profile sound production and podcast studio builds; clients include the London School of Economics and the Royal Central School of Speech & Drama.

Designed for materials optimisation and off-site construction, Akustak® radically reduces waste, during manufacture and installation, whilst its unique demountable form facilitates recovery and reuse.

In recognition of its sustainability credentials, Akustak® has been selected for growth and scale support by the UK Government’s Innovate UK EDGE.

Prefabricated and portable, Akustak® accelerates construction timescales, with configurations installed from 15 sq/m, per hour, per fitter.

UKAS-accredited laboratory tested for resistance to sound (in accordance with BS EN ISO 10140-2: 2010 & 717-1: 2013) and resistance to fire (in accordance with BS EN 1364-1: 2015), Akustak® can achieve Building Regulations Part – E & B compliance.

What Makes The Start-up Innovative

Akustak® was granted a UK patent in 2020, for its unique modular design.

This design, for the following reasons, significantly improves the efficiency of interior wall construction:

  1. Low Waste: Designed for materials optimisation, Akustak® eliminates over-ordering & expendable off-cuts, whilst its unique modular design facilitates disassembly & reuse.
  2. Precision Engineered: Precision-formed in a factory environment, Akustak® seamlessly interconnects; minimising on-site errors & re-work.
  1. Efficient Access: Measuring <8 m2/ 25 kg, per module, Akustak® can be safely manually handled by one person (as per HSE guidelines), fitting through narrow staircases & corridors, & inside elevators.
  1. Rapid Installation: Prefabricated & portable, Akustak® installations are a rapid process of assembly; from 15 sq/mper hour, per fitter.
  1. Disruption Free: Manufactured off-site, Akustak® minimises trades & site activities, with installations requiring hand-tools only; enhancing health & safety standards on-site.
  1. Flexible: Akustak® supports surface-mounted fixtures & fittings, & service penetrations (without reinforcements &/or wall plugs). Its fascias come in a range of materials, colours & finishes.

How The Start-up Has Been Designed To Scale Up Quickly

Modules are manufactured to a standardised size (670 mm x 1200 mm); formed, entirely, of parts dimensionally coordinated with universal sheet/slab sizes. As such, Akustak® lends itself perfectly to mass production; supported by two fully equipped, UK-based, production hubs.
