Net Zero Carbon Buildings: A Framework Definition 2024 Update
Project launch overview
In 2019, UKGBC’s Advancing Net Zero programme released its Net Zero Carbon Buildings: A Framework Definition report. This was the first attempt at creating a definition of and process for delivering a net zero building in the UK market through consensus, involving contributions from around 70 experts from 50 organisations. In the 5 years since its launch, the Framework Definition has successfully helped stakeholders specify and realise net zero on their construction projects.
Industry is now gearing up for the first release of the UK Net Zero Carbon Buildings Standard, which will provide a set of criteria and performance requirements for a net zero building, along with a robust approach to verifying that those requirements are met. The Standard is collaborative initiative between UKGBC and 11 other organisations active in the UK built environment, supported by over 300 sector experts.
In light of the forthcoming Standard, UKGBC intends to evolve the Framework Definition to ensure it continues to provide valuable guidance to those in industry seeking to design, deliver, or operate a net carbon building in the UK.
